Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School serves grades 6-8 in the Summit City School District. It is among the few public middle schools in New Jersey to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10.
The Middle School offers comprehensive instruction in math, reading, science, social studies and language arts, and builds on the skills acquired in elementary school.
In 2004, the Middle School was named after Summit Middle School's office manager, Mr. Lawton C. Johnson, who is the first employee in the history of the Summit school system to attain 50 years of service.
Twins Micaela and Zachary Kaplan, sixth graders, were among the Environmental Action Club members who installed plants in the rain garden near the school.
