Peter Yarrow, one of the original members of the famous American folk rock group PETER, PAUL AND MARY, well-known for such songs as "Puff the Magic Dragon” and "If I Had a Hammer,” will be performing in a free concert in Kyiv at 6pm on December 18th at Ukrainskiy Dim (Khreshchatyk, 2). Mr. Yarrow will be joined on stage by his two children, Bethany and Christopher, and by Ukrainian folk rock legend Mariya Burmaka. Ms. Burmaka, like Mr. Yarrow, is deeply committed to social activism and advocacy in her life and in her music, dedicating herself to numerous worthy causes, including the fight against HIV/AIDs, to deal with legacy of Chernobyl, and to help children, including through education. The upcoming concert, organized in support of the "Don’t Laugh at Me” campaign within the framework of Project Respect, aims to use music, video, and accompanying instructional materials (translated for distribution to Ukrainian teachers) to combat bullying among schoolchildren, as well as to promote tolerance more broadly. Mr. Yarrow has brought Operation Respect’s message of peace and understanding to schools throughout America over the past several years. Most impressively perhaps, he traveled to the Middle East to perform for Israeli and Palestinian youngsters in March/April 2009. This exciting, historic concert in Kyiv by Ms. Burmaka, Mr. Yarrow and his children is being supported by Operation Respect, the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, the Peace Corps in Ukraine, the local branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and the Ukrainian NGO Alternativa-V.
