Phillis Wheatley was America's first black poet.

Born in Senegal, Africa in 1753, she was sold into slavery at the age of seven to John and Susannah Wheatley of Boston. Although originally brought into the Wheatley household as a servant and attendant to Wheatley's wife, Phillis was soon accepted as a member of the family, and was raised with the Wheatley's other two children.

The Statue of Liberty is, of course, New York's premier sight, though officially it's in New Jersey. A gift from the French to celebrate America's 100th year of independence, the statue was unveiled in 1886.
Tourist access is by ferry from Battery Park where all visitors now have to undergo an airport style body and baggage check. If you wish to climb the monument, even to the lower level, you will probably need to book ahead by phone or internet, or at least arrive very early.
